FCP Book Club: The World is Fat (Take Two)
March 19, 2010Because of the dial-in confusion in February, we are hoping you'll join us for this month's book club if you missed it in February!
The World is Fat by Barry Popkin
2:00 pm EST/1:00 pm CST/Noon MST/11:00 am PST
At the conclusion of this Book Club, participants will be able to:
1. Describe how they would you use this book in their practice, and what is the most important information they would share with patients/clients.
2. Compare this text to other books read in Book Club.
3. Discuss how we as RDs can work locally to change global obesity rates.
Moderated by Diane Welland, MS, RD
Diane Welland M.S., R.D. is a food and nutrition writer (The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Clean Eating) and an active member of the FCP book club. She earned BS degrees in Nutrition and Communications (double major) and her Masters in Human Nutrition.
Questions to review while reading the book:
-- Do you agree with Popkin's theory about the rise of obesity? Are there other issues that should be considered?
-- How do you feel about the solutions Popkin presents for combating global obesity?
-- What can each of us do on a more local level to help combat global obesity?

While functional foods are a rapidly growing market segment, their sale must be approached with caution, as the FDA has sharply increased its enforcement activities under the new administration. Moreover, the FDA does not recognize functional foods because they straddle several FDA classifications, and may involve numerous regulations.
If you're involved in the development, marketing, or labeling of healthful foods, the Wellness 10 conference, powered by Food Technology magazine, is a great opportunity to learn about the regulatory environment for functional foods from some of the industry’s most well-respected experts. Join Anthony Pavel, J.D., Attorney with K&L Gates, and Shanon Trueman, M.S., an Analyst with Nerac, Inc. as they discuss FDA's enforcement of functional foods using examples of currently marketed products. You'll learn how to:
- Apply FDA regulations to functional foods
- Incorporate applicable advertising law principles in your marketing efforts
- Gather and evaluate the types of data needed to support health claims for functional foods

FCP Webinar: Americans Don't Know Beans About Beans
April 23, 2010Join us for a Webinar on April 23
Time: 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM PDT (10 AM MDT, 11 AM CDT, Noon EDT)
Space is limited - you can link to registration below.
Research is presented to explain how the continuing changes in the terminology used for beans and legumes in dietary guidance materials over the past century and the repeated changes in food group assignment for beans and legumes may have created a "communication gap" that is now responsible for the "consumption gap" from this valuable food group. Recommendations are provided to illustrate how dietitians and nutrition policy makers can improve dietary guidance messages and materials to help close the gaps in consumer knowledge and behavior regarding both bean and vegetable intake recommendations.
